Register today for APHA’s Annual Meeting to get Early-Bird discounts
Aug. 16 is the last day to save more than $100 in registration fees for this year’s APHA Annual Meeting, which will gather in San Diego Nov. 10-14 and rally around a theme of “Creating the Healthiest Nation: Health Equity Now.” Speaking at this year’s Annual Meeting — expected to welcome 12,000 public health practitioners from around the world — will be some of the country’s leading voices for equity and justice as well as hundreds of local public health workers who’ll present on the science, strategies and practices for successfully moving health equity forward.
Among this year’s general session speakers are political scientist and commentator Melissa Harris-Perry; Ai-jen Poo, director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance; Linda Goler Blount, president and CEO of the Black Women’s Health Imperative; and David Williams, Harvard professor and renowned researcher on the social determinants of health. (Go here for a full list of general session speakers.) Then there’s the hundreds of scientific sessions and networking opportunities covering the full spectrum of public health science, policy and practice, from tobacco control and disease surveillance to community organizing and partnership-building.
Many of this year’s sessions will zero in on the health equity theme, highlighting the problems, presenting on promising efforts, and (hopefully) inspiring action. Here’s a quick sampling of this year’s many equity-related sessions: during session 3161, presenters will discuss the role of institutional racism in gun violence disparities and fatal police shootings; at session 4045, speakers will discuss efforts to narrow maternal mortality and child health gaps in the U.S. and globally; and at session 4126, speakers will highlight the role of the Affordable Care Act in advancing health equity and ways to fight off efforts to undermine the landmark law. And that’s just a small sampling of the meeting’s health equity sessions — visit the meeting’s Online Program for the full listing.
But wait, there’s a ton more. In addition to the hundreds of scientific and poster sessions, registration also comes with access to the Public Health Expo, where you can browse hundreds of booths representing public health agencies, organizations, schools, nonprofits, publishers, vendors and more. There’s also celebrations, networking events, award ceremonies, social media training, continuing education credits and career guidance. Whew!
