Protecting Health from Extreme Heat — State Leadership in Action

Extreme heat is now the deadliest weather-related threat in the U.S., and it’s only getting worse. In 2023 alone, an estimated 2,300 people died from extreme heat — but the true toll is likely far higher. Rising temperatures are making people sicker, worsening chronic conditions, and straining already overwhelmed health systems.

Join us for a timely discussion with health leaders and policymakers on how states can lead the way in protecting communities from extreme heat.

APHA will be joined by other member organizations of the Alliance for Heat Resilience and Health (AHRH) — a coalition dedicated to responding to the health harms of extreme heat. We’ll also share highlights from our national Health Organization Sign-On Letter, led by AHRH, urging Governors to lead on heat — calling for stronger state preparedness and protection plans.
