APHA announces sessions for Policy Action Institute, Feb. 6

Public Health Under Siege: Improving Policy in Turbulent Times, a daylong event held in conjunction with Academy Health’s National Health Policy Conference, will feature elected officials, policy experts and public health leaders offering insight on addressing some of the biggest policy challenges of the day.

Recently announced speakers include Leana Wen, new president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America; Brett Giroir, assistant secretary for health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; and former congressman and health policy champion Henry Waxman.

Sessions will offer insight into policies that work, opportunities to understand policy priorities from public health leaders, and solutions to creating nonpartisan approaches that can ultimately improve community health and create the healthiest nation in one generation.

“As we enter 2019 and the 116th Congress begins its work, the public health community faces extraordinary challenges,” said Susan Polan, associate executive director for public affairs and advocacy at APHA. “Now is the time to redouble our efforts to improve community health. This event will equip public health professionals with the right tools at the right time.”

Policy Action Institute highlights include sessions addressing the state of U.S. public health policy, violence as a public health issue and regulatory policy as a social determinant tool. The program will showcase lessons learned from campaigns that work and help public health professionals understand how to apply their skills and knowledge to address vexing policy challenges present today.
