Alliance for the Public's Health Internship

Established by the American Public Health Association (APHA) in 2020, the Alliance for the Public’s Health brings together organizations, leaders and the public around a shared goal: making sure everyone has what they need to be healthy and thrive.

We convene partners from many sectors including public health, health care, grassroots organizations, faith groups, business, philanthropy and education. By connecting these partners, the Alliance helps people work together, share ideas and align around key issues such as public health infrastructure, funding, communications and advocacy to support healthy communities.

The Alliance is engaged in a variety of grant-funded projects, including initiatives focused on partnership building, storytelling, advocacy, communications, workforce development, movement building, organizing, and other collaborative public health efforts.

The intern(s) will help support all aspects of the Alliance, focusing on both communications and programmatic activities. Interns will have opportunities to learn about nonprofit public health work, cross-sector partnerships, advocacy, communications, and national public health initiatives. APHA internships are unpaid and located in Washington, D.C, hybrid or remote options may be available.

Interns should have the ability and/or interest in:

  • Assisting with developing Alliance materials.
  • Learning about and researching emerging public health topics.
  • Capturing lessons learned from meetings and collaborative work.
  • Coordinating meetings and supporting partnership-building efforts.
  • Developing newsletters, storytelling content, or other communications materials.
  • Supporting advocacy, movement-building, and organizing efforts.
  • Thinking critically about equity and how it shapes public health practice and community engagement.
  • Managing multiple priorities and deadlines in a collaborative environment.
  • Maintenance of the resource library navigator PHERN:
    • Conducting research to identify items to include.
    • Helping determine how best to display information and resources.
    • Providing information about areas of interest to Alliance members, stakeholders, and the broader field.

All APHA interns also work on the Association’s Get Ready campaign, writing blog posts and working on group projects each semester.

The Alliance offers one or two internship per semester to qualified students. We are looking for creative, enthusiastic, and out-of-the-box thinkers. Must be comfortable working as part of a team. Experience with deadlines and translation of evidence-based information into lay language is a plus, as is experience with social media and websites. Opportunities for internships are available year-round and typically last 10 weeks. To assure that the intern maximizes her or his experience, we ask that the intern work at least 21 hours per week. All APHA internships are unpaid. Start and end times are negotiable. Hybrid and remote options are available.
