Center for School, Health and Education Internship

About the Center:

The Center for School, Health and Education at APHA advances school-based health centers as a public health strategy to reduce health inequities and increase graduation rates among high risk and vulnerable children and adolescents. Young people drop out of school for many of the same reasons that put them at risk for poor health as youngsters, and later as adults. Homelessness, teen pregnancy, hunger, school violence and chronic or traumatic stress are some of the social determinants of not only health but also educational success. Students who do not graduate suffer a wide range of negative social, economic, political, health and criminal justice outcomes that transcend generations. Accordingly, education and high school completion is a leading predictor of long-term health, making high school graduation a public health imperative. APHA internships are unpaid and located in Washington, D.C.

Major Responsibilities:

The internship offers students the opportunity to build and strengthen professional skills particularly in research, analysis, writing, organization, and interpersonal communications. Summer 2018 internships will focus on literature reviews and presentation of findings on: LGBTQ needs, school violence, Latinx and/or immigrant students, substance abuse, recreational cannabis use, suicide, social media influence, and resilience. Other responsibilities may include attending relevant briefing and seminars, providing support for webinars, and assisting with committee and partner meetings.
