Recently reported deaths of Americans in the midst of a troubling outbreak of measles across the nation should serve as a stark reminder of the costly impacts of vaccine disinformation and the ways it hinders the U.S. response to slow the spread of the infectious disease. With more cases piling up in almost all states, vaccination remains the best defense to keep communities healthy and our kids in schools and out of hospitals. Allowing disinformation into vaccine guidance discussions further adds to uncertainty, leaving the nation vulnerable to preventable illness and death. Decades of research have shown vaccines to be safe and effective. Current guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Family Physicians provides recommendations to protect families, giving them an evidence-based roadmap toward a healthier life. APHA calls upon HHS to lead a comprehensive national vaccination campaign to get all children caught up on their shots to mitigate this preventable tragedy of vaccine-preventable diseases.
