Public Health Policies Must Be Inclusive and Practical for All

The American Public Health Association mourns the passing of country music icon, advocate and public health champion, Dolly Parton. The world has lost a leader in caring for our neighbors. With a heart full of compassion, she led the way, showing the world the importance of advocating for those who are often ignored and cast aside and seeing the humanity of all.

Parton’s legacy of tackling childhood literacy through her Imagination Library, championing LGBTQ+ rights, speaking up for Black communities, advocating for inclusivity and her philanthropic efforts to make the world a better place shines brightly. It is a light that serves as a reminder that good health is for everyone.

Her support and donations to COVID-19 research helped with the development of the Moderna vaccine, one that continues to save millions of lives. Parton cared deeply for the well-being of all communities. It is why she was awarded the APHA Presidential Citation in 2023. Her contributions to life-saving public health research exemplified the need for compassion.

Politicians, business leaders and community leaders of all sorts must join public health leaders and practitioners in demonstrating that same compassion. Policies must be inclusive and practical for all. Good health is for everyone.
