Statement from APHA Executive Director Georges C. Benjamin, MD

APHA mourns the loss of Dr. William H. Foege, a titan of public health whose life and work made people around the world healthier and safer. From his leadership in the eradication of smallpox to his service as Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Foege consistently applied science, innovation and moral clarity to address the most pressing public health challenges of his time.

William H. Foege, MD, MPH, began his career as a member of the Epidemic Intelligence Service, working in global health. He co-founded The Task Force for Global Health and played a central role in the global campaign that successfully eradicated smallpox in the 1970s — one of the greatest public health achievements in history. He was appointed Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 1977.

His distinguished career included spending six years as the Executive Director of The Carter Center and through his work with the Task Force for Global Health, he helped increase global childhood immunization coverage from approximately 20% to 80% — an accomplishment widely recognized as one of the most successful peacetime collaborative efforts ever undertaken.

Throughout his life, he has spoken and lead with moral clarity, a trait not seen today in some of our nation’s health leaders. His moral authority, voice and presence will be missed. Within APHA, Dr. Foege was a dedicated leader and champion. He served as APHA President in 1986 and was awarded the APHA Presidential Citation in 2002. This rare honor is presented only on occasions of unusual merit to individuals or organizations whose contributions have profoundly advanced public health and the public health profession.

We are all better because of Dr. Foege’s work and his example of public service. He was a giant in public health, a leader throughout his career, and a role model whose legacy will continue to inspire generations committed to protecting and advancing the public’s health.
