Statement from APHA Executive Director Georges C. Benjamin, MD

The American Public Health Association wishes President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump a quick recovery following their disclosure early today that they have tested positive for COVID-19, a stunning announcement that reinforces the need for all Americans to be vigilant and take the necessary science-backed precautions against this deadly pandemic.

It should be a sobering reminder to all that we must continue to practice the best safety practices in our own daily lives to protect ourselves. Wear a mask. Wash your hands. Keep a safe distance from each other, at least six feet. These are the best public health protections we have against this virus that has killed more than 200,000 Americans and infected more than 7 million nationwide.

The news is certainly jarring and unsettling. But we can and will get through this. It is a time for all of us to come together as a country, support each other, take the best safety precautions, rely on science and the best of health care to see the president, the first lady and our country through this difficult time.
