Western Wildfires: Keeping Communities from Polluted Air

Webinar //

Date:

May 21 2018, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM EST

Description

NACCHO is pleased to host a webinar on Western Wildfires: Keeping Communities from Polluted Air. In 2017, Cal Fire recorded 7,117 wildfires and nearly 506,000 acres burned. This includes the largest wildfire recorded, Thomas, in Ventura & Santa Barbara County, and the most destructive (and 3rd deadliest) wildfire recorded, Tubbs, in Sonoma County. While combating 1,038 wildfires in Oregon during 2017, the Oregon Department of Forestry also deployed 300 firefighters to combat the Thomas Fire. This webinar event will discuss the role that local health departments and jurisdictions play in preparing for and responding to wildfires and the health impacts of wild fire smoke. We will first hear from local health departments in California and Oregon as they present a recap of the 2017 wildfires and respective organizational responses. During the second half of the webinar, there will be a facilitated discussion with additional subject matter experts from academia and federal partners.
