From Problem to Practice: Applying AI Responsibly in Public Health

The purpose of this virtual Learning Institute is to equip public health professionals with essential knowledge and practical skills to understand, evaluate and responsibly implement artificial intelligence (AI) tools in their work.

This course will be most useful for public health professionals with minimal to entry-level familiarity with AI. Participants will gain a foundational understanding of AI, including its relevance to public health applications such as disease surveillance, behavioral prediction and health equity. Through real-world case studies and interactive group discussions, learners will critically assess the ethical, legal and social implications of AI — including bias, privacy and accountability — and explore tools for equitable and transparent integration. Participants will learn to identify opportunities for AI adoption, recognize risks and unintended consequences, and engage in strategic planning for AI integration in their professional contexts. The course will be delivered by faculty with expertise in AI, public health practice and ethics, ensuring that both the technical and humanistic dimensions of the topic are addressed.
