Joyce ReNae Guafin, BS

Joyce Gaufin’s extensive career in public health has focused on supporting and developing the workforce and creating and strengthening collaborative public health partnerships. She served as President of the American Public Health Association (2014). Gaufin has worked in public health since 1973, spending 30 years with the Utah Department of Health, and 10 years as the Executive Director of the Great Basin Public Health Leadership Institute. She is recognized as a public health leadership expert both nationally and internationally. Gaufin co-edited the book, Mastering Public Health: Essential Skills for Effective Practice (Oxford University Press, 2012), with Dr. Barry Levy. She is an Adjunct Faculty member at the University of Utah, Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, Division of Public Health. 

Gaufin received a B.S. in Sociology from Westminster College (Summa Cum Laude). Gaufin has received several honors including the Theodore Bruce Beatty Award from the Utah Public Health Association, 1998 Utah Medical Association Presidential Citation, National Public Health Leadership Development Network Balderson Lifetime Public Health Leadership Award, UPHA 100-Year Distinguished Leader Award for Extraordinary Leadership, Nevada Public Health Association Lifetime Achievement Award, APHA Executive Director’s Citation, and the APHA Lyndon Haviland Mentorship Award.
