APHA Press Publications Internship

APHA Press, an imprint of the American Public Health Association, publishes approximately 5 books per year, ranging from methods and manuals to practice guides and case studies, on topics as varied as life course theory, disaster preparedness, urban planning, gun violence, alcohol-related problems, chronic and communicable diseases, and racism.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Persons seeking book publishing experience, as well as those with prior publishing expertise, are encouraged to apply for this fall internship. Duties will encompass many aspects of book production and marketing from developing social media products to proofreading chapters to researching copyright issues, as well as performing other needed tasks for the Press such as compiling author consent forms, updating style guides, and assisting with the publications board meeting. All APHA interns are also expected to contribute to the Association’s Get Ready campaign, writing blog posts and collaborating on group projects each semester.

The intern will participate in Get Ready campaign public events.

QUALIFICATIONS

We are looking for self-motivated and detail-oriented candidates at any stage of their careers—from college students to retirees—with strong writing and editing skills who are passionate about books and public health. Prior experience developing and launching social media products is a plus. At the end of the internship, the intern will have developed and/or maintained at least one social media product for the Press, produced blogs and/or podcasts for the Association, and gained a solid knowledge of book publishing—from acquisitions to production, printing, and marketing. APHA internships are unpaid, but credit is available. The selected intern must reside in the DC Metropolitan Area for the duration of the internship, which will last between 3 to 4 months. A minimum of 20 hours per week is preferred.
