Statement from APHA Executive Director Georges C. Benjamin, MD
Washington, DC — The American Public Health Association supports the Biden administration’s COVID-19 action plan as a major step forward in ending the pandemic. We join President Biden in urging everyone to protect the health of themselves, their families and communities by becoming fully vaccinated.
The new multi-pronged plan will boost vaccination rates, which is essential to overcome COVID-19. Only through scientifically proven public health strategies, such as vaccination and mask-wearing, can we beat this pandemic.
We have seen significant reductions in sickness and death among people who have been fully vaccinated. This is now a pandemic of the unvaccinated, and it is spilling over into our children, who cannot yet get their shots. The solution is to get everyone who is eligible their vaccinations. The president’s plan can achieve that, and we are here to help.
We call on those who have spread misinformation and distractions to put aside their negativity and work productively to move our nation forward.
The president’s comprehensive plan is a meaningful step to address the COVID-19 pandemic, and we must all come together behind it to meet this challenge.
