Let’s walk the walk!
As public health professionals in the 21st century, we strive to create the healthiest nation. So why not start with ourselves? Let’s walk that walk!
Fortunately, APHA’s 2019 Annual Meeting and Expo is filled with opportunities to stay active, be well and take a quick rest between scientific sessions. Check out the APHA Annual Meeting Wellness Center — located on the Arch Street Bridge inside Philadelphia’s Pennsylvania Convention Center — where attendees can take advantage of a full schedule of daily activities, including walking groups, relaxation games, meditation, stretching and chair massages.
If your goals are to reduce stress, burn calories and improve your heart health, then join your peers in the meeting’s 2019 Steps Challenge.
“This year's Annual Meeting goal is 10 million steps,” said Angelica Walker, APHA’s meetings and marketing coordinator. “It will be the most steps we’ve ever had at the Annual Meeting.”
Sign-up instructions for the Steps Challenge, which kicks off Sunday, Nov. 3, are available in the APHA 2019 mobile app. Participants who take at least 10,000 steps each day for at least two days — that’s about five miles — will be entered into a raffle for prizes. Winners will be notified by email on Tuesday, Nov. 5. (One great way to rack up the miles is to join the Monday Mile Walking Group in one of their quick treks. Check out the Wellness Center site for times and dates.)
Another way to log those steps? Dance! Join us Sunday for the second APHA Dance Party in Exhibit Hall Lobby A inside the convention center, featuring dance tunes from DJ Music Mann. Learn the moves to APHA’s official dance, then join us for some freestyle dancing.
Sightseeing is another way to hit those 10,000 steps, and fortunately, the convention center is located smack dab in Philadelphia’s Center City. APHA 2019 is a short walk from the local eateries inside Reading Terminal Market, Robert Indiana’s iconic LOVE sculpture, and just a 13-minute walk to Liberty Bell Center.
Plus, what better way to claim victory than by running Rocky-style up the iconic 72 stone steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art? There’s so much to see and do in the city of brotherly love — check out these options.
