Statement from APHA Executive Director Georges C. Benjamin, MD

“APHA shares in the devastation felt by many families and loved ones this morning as we mourn the loss of 10 lives taken by gun violence in Boulder, Colorado, yesterday. We condemn this violent attack and express our gratitude for the first responders, including Officer Eric Talley who was also a victim of the attack.

Less than a week after the tragic shootings in Atlanta, I remain beset by the same sadness and outrage shared by millions of Americans. Such deadly shootings are far too frequent. After seven mass killings this year alone, we face a new urgency to address gun violence as the public health crisis that it is.

Gun violence is preventable through a comprehensive public health approach that keeps families and communities safe. We all have a part to play.

APHA and the public health community continue to stand ready to help identify and implement commonsense solutions so this enormous toll on our nation’s health is no more.”
