A survivor-led conference to end gender-based violence
Survivors of domestic violence and sex trafficking, advocates and allies in the fight to create a world free from gender-based violence will come together at Sanctuary for Families’ 2019 Vision for Change Conference on October 27. This free survivor-led conference will explore various forms of abuse, as well as emerging trends and challenges in the movement to end gender-based violence. The event is hosted by the Horace Mann School in Riverdale.
The conference has been approved for three hours of Continuing Education for Licensed Master Social Workers and Licensed Clinical Social Workers in New York state. It is also intended for survivor leaders, advocates, and those who work in a service provision capacity including direct services, outreach, education or training, and public speaking. All workshops will be facilitated by at least one survivor leader.
Topics include:
- Commercial sexual exploitation and international policy
- Galvanizing communities to create pathways for housing for survivors of gender-based violence
- Why don’t they just leave? The power of psychological coercion
- Survivor resiliency
- Opportunities to connect, communicate and care for victims of gender violence
- The role of ambivalent sexism in intimate partner violence
- What we should know about the public charge rule (facilitated in Spanish)
- Law enforcement and domestic violence
- Building trust and exploring power dynamics between survivors and organizations
Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
NOTE: The Vision for Change Conference may not be appropriate for individuals currently seeking emotional support and services for ongoing trauma, or for children under the age of 18.
