The Nation’s Health special section addresses preventing sexual assaults
With a rise in national conversation about sexual violence, The Nation’s Health newspaper devoted a special section in its April 2018 issue addressing the issue and sharing health strategies that work to prevent it.
“We were really pleased to devote a portion of the newspaper to this critically important public health priority,” said Michele Late, executive editor of The Nation’s Health. “We’ve reported the latest strategies and organized the information in an easy-to-use format. Our readers will find it very helpful in taking a public health approach to preventing sexual violence.”
The section, launched during April’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month, spotlights resources and tools for preventing sexual violence on campus, empowering women and girls, engaging men and boys, and integrating gender norm change. The issue also features a Q&A with the Office of Women’s Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on supporting women and preventing sexual assault.
“Sexual violence is a serious issue in the U.S., with 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men experiencing some form of sexual violence with physical contact in their lifetimes,” said Mighty Fine, MPH, director of APHA’s Center for Public Health Practice and Professional Development. “But with the right tools and resources, we can stop sexual violence before it begins.”
All of the content in the special section is open access and available for public health professionals to read and share.
This is the second special section The Nation’s Health has published in the last year. The July 2017 issue featured a section on preventing injury and violence.
