APHA 2018 will gather public health experts and leaders from all over the world to share their science, stories and passion for this year’s theme, Creating the Healthiest Nation: Health Equity Now.
This year’s closing general session on Wednesday, Nov. 14 will zero in on women’s health equity. In Dying Too Soon: A Look at Women’s Health, speakers will tackle the question of why American women die premature deaths, and what the public health community can do about it.
Women continue to die in unacceptable rates from preventable diseases. In addition to the leading causes such as cardiovascular disease, the panel will discuss deaths stemming from childbirth complications, domestic violence and disparities between ethnic populations.
The session will be led by Michael Lu, Cynthia Lamberth, Linda Gouler Blount and Debra Pérez, pictured below from left to right.
Linda Gouler Blount, president and CEO of the Black Women’s Health Imperative, leads efforts to positively impact black women’s lives through advocacy and public policy, health education, research and leadership development. Michael Lu is a George Washington University professor and senior associate dean for Academic, Student & Faculty Affairs, who also served as the director of the federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services between 2012 and 2017.
Cynthia Lamberth is the executive director of the Kentucky Population Health Institute, with a mission focused on building partnerships and collaborating with stakeholders for improved health and quality of life. Debra Pérez is the chief measurement, evaluation and learning officer for the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, working closely with the grantmaking teams to advance the organization’s work in science, environmental conservation and patient care in the Bay Area.
Together, these panelists will give the closing session audience an updated perspective on women’s health disparities, new ways for public health to tackle these challenges and inspire action in our field.
