Climate Change

"We're committed to making sure the nation knows about the effects of climate change on health. If anyone doesn't think this is a severe problem, they are fooling themselves."
-- APHA Executive Director Georges Benjamin, in The Washington Post

APHA news release: National Climate Assessment is grave reminder of action needed to protect public health from climate change

With participation from members, experts and partners, APHA has formed a multiyear strategic plan (PDF) to address climate change and health — view the summary (PDF). The strategic plan supports the vision, "Climate change is a national priority with broad political and social support. Our nation will address it in ways that improve public health and health equity, creating the healthiest nation in one generation."

The American Journal of Public Health published a supplemental issue on Climate Change and Health Equity with support from the Kresge Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Giving the public health community open access to the most recent and innovative research and application of climate and health solutions, this one-of-a-kind issue filled a void in the current research. To help make the information accessible to the general public, APHA translated a few of the articles into two user-friendly factsheets: Heat-Related Deaths (PDF) and Malnutrition (PDF).

2018 Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change Brief for the United States of America The Lancet Countdown: Tracking Progress on Health and Climate Change is an international research collaboration dedicated to tracking the world's response to climate change and the health benefits that emerge from these responses.

This companion U.S. brief, newly released by APHA and The Lancet, hones in on the health impacts of climate change in America. As former EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy at a Nov. 29 event to launch the report about the public health experts who wrote the document, "We have to listen to them and stop denying science."

APHA applauds the Clean Power Plan, a bold strategy against climate change introduced by the White House and EPA that is projected to reduce carbon pollution from power plants by 32 percent by 2030 and protect the health of our nation for generations to come.
