For many, working in the fields of injury, violence, and emergency preparedness is a labor of love and commitment. Many significant accomplishments will go unrecognized or under- recognized. Although the Section sponsors awards to recognize individuals and organizations who have contributed significantly to the field, few members take advantage of the opportunity to nominate their accomplished colleagues.
The ICEHS Section has authorized the following awards for recognition of individuals’ outstanding contributions to injury/violence prevention and control and emergency health services. Although not all awards may be awarded each year, nominations are sought for all of the following awards:
Distinguished Career: To recognize an individual, frequently near the end of his/her career, for outstanding dedication and leadership in injury/violence prevention and control and emergency health services with contributions and achievements that have a significant and long-term impact on the field. Recipient need not be a Section member.
International Distinguished Career: To recognize an individual, frequently near the end of his/her career, for outstanding dedication and leadership in injury/violence prevention and control and emergency health services internationally with contributions and achievements that have a significant and long-term impact on the field. Recipient need not be a Section member.
Excellence in Science: To recognize an individual, frequently at mid-career, for outstanding dedication and leadership in the science of injury/violence prevention and control and emergency health services with contributions and achievements that have a significant and long-term impact on the field. Public Service: To recognize outstanding dedication and leadership in injury/violence prevention practice and advocacy with contributions and achievements that has had a significant and long-term impact on the field of injury control and emergency health services. Recipient must be a Section member. (Join at https://www.apha.org/membership).
Institutional Public Service: To recognize outstanding contribution from an organization, agency or company for leadership in injury/violence prevention practice and advocacy with contributions and achievements that have a significant and long-term impact on the field of injury/violence prevention and control and emergency health services.
ICEHS Presidential Road Safety Scholarship Fund
The ICEHS Presidential Road Safety Scholarship Fund is supported by leaders of national and international traffic safety organizations to help our student and early career professional members attend the American Public Health Association annual meeting. Through this fund, we are providing awards of $500 each to help offset the cost of registration and/or travel for the APHA Annual meeting. This support is intended for members of the ICEHS section; however, those who currently belong to another section may also join ICEHS and are then eligible to apply. Preference is given to applicants who are pursuing road safety topics.

Student Paper Competition
The purpose of the ICEHS Student Paper Competition Award is to foster and reward quality research efforts among students involved in the field. The SPC has been an important and popular activity for the ICEHS section since it was first implemented at the 1992 Annual Meeting of the APHA. The prize awarded with the SPC has historically come from generous donations from our membership, including the Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety. Currently, the prize is sponsored by the Datalys Center for Sports Injury Research and Prevention.
Students are eligible to participate in the SPC if they: 1) are currently a student or have completed their program within the last year; 2) are members of ICEHS; and 3) were first authors of an abstract accepted by ICEHS for presentation at the APHA annual meeting (the work submitted must have been performed as a student and previously unpublished). Students who have abstracts accepted to the ICEHS latebreakers sessions are also invited to participate. The deadline for submission of your application and paper is typically 4-6 weeks prior to the APHA Annual Meeting.

Student Oral and Poster Presentation Awards
Alongside the Student Paper Competition, in recent years, APHA Leadership have introduced the Student Oral and Poster Presentation Awards. Like the Student Paper Award, the Student Oral Presentation Award aims to highlight the research being done by our student members, with a focus on the student's ability to verbally communicate their findings. A few years later, the Student Poster Presentation Award was introduced to highlight the top-quality posters that our students have been presenting at APHA over the past annual meetings.
Students are eligible to participate in the Student Oral and Poster Presentation Awards if they: 1) are currently a student or have completed their program within the last year; 2) are members of ICEHS; and 3) were first authors of an abstract accepted by ICEHS for presentation at the APHA annual meeting (the work submitted must have been performed as a student and previously unpublished). Students who have abstracts accepted to the ICEHS latebreakers sessions are also invited to participate for the Poster Award but are not eligible for the Oral Presentation Award. The deadline for submission of your application for the Oral Presentation Award is typically 4-6 weeks prior to the APHA Annual Meeting; the deadline for submission of your application and poster for the Poster Presentation award is typically 2-3 weeks prior to the APHA Annual Meeting.
