Statement from Georges Benjamin, MD, executive director, American Public Health Association

Washington, D.C., June 29, 2017 — “I would like to personally congratulate Dr. Jerome Adams on his nomination today as U.S. surgeon general, and I look forward to working with him as he fills the critically important role of our nation’s doctor.

“As head of the Office of the Surgeon General, Dr. Adams will play a leading role in our national efforts to becoming a healthier nation. Once confirmed, the American Public Health Association looks forward to working with him particularly on work force issues such as strengthening the public health work force and emerging challenges like the current opioid epidemic. The U.S. surgeon general’s role as the National Prevention Council chair and leader of the U.S Public Health Service Commissioned Corps means that Dr.  Adams is positioned to make an indelible impact on the role of health promotion and disease prevention in our country. As APHA members face new challenges in navigating our changing health care system, we look forward to his partnership.

“Dr. Adams has extensive experience in health care and has worked on the front lines of public health in Indiana, and his status as a working physician will serve him well in leading our nation’s health promotion and disease prevention efforts.”
