APHA applauds nomination of Karen DeSalvo as HHS assistant secretary for health

Statement from Georges Benjamin, MD, executive director

Washington, D.C., May 7, 2015 — “The American Public Health Association welcomes the nomination of Karen DeSalvo, MD, MPH, MSc, as assistant secretary for health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

“Dr. DeSalvo is a proven, strong and innovative leader as well as a problem solver. She understands the challenges of our health system having served on both sides of the health enterprise as a clinician and as a public health practitioner and administrator.

“She has provided solid leadership in developing a national health IT plan as director of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology at HHS and bringing diverse stakeholders together.

“Dr. DeSalvo also has a strong history of public health practice, having served as health commissioner in New Orleans. She helped develop innovative policies, improve programs and restore the delivery of health services to communities devastated in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

“We enthusiastically support Dr. DeSalvo’s nomination and look forward to working with her as assistant secretary for health at HHS in helping improve and protect the health of the American people.”
