Washington, D.C. — "On behalf of the American Public Health Association, I want to commend CVS Caremark on its historic decision to eliminate all tobacco products from its stores. APHA has long dedicated itself to fighting against preventable, serious health threats such as tobacco addiction. We look forward to other companies that are fundamentally in the health business to follow suit.

"This is a breakthrough moment for public health in our global quest to end the tobacco epidemic. It shows that the private sector can make smart business decisions that create a healthier society, and also break the codependence it has with the tobacco industry to increase revenues at the cost of itscustomers’ health and well-being.

"Tobacco is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., claiming more than 400,000 lives each year. This commitment from one of our nation’s most important businesses is the next logical step in bringing us closer to becoming the world’s healthiest nation.

"With its announcement today, CVS Caremark has shown that it champions the health of all people and all communities."
