WASHINGTON, D.C. — “On behalf of APHA I applaud the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for taking first steps toward addressing the potential harm presented by e-cigarettes and other unregulated tobacco products. FDA’s long-awaited decision tackles a critical gap in protecting children’s health nationwide.
“We’ve seen an alarming growth in the use of e-cigarettes among our youth, which may encourage conventional cigarette smoking among American children. This is a big public health concern. Despite great advancements in preventing the spread of tobacco addiction, tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death in this country, killing 480,000 people every year.
“While more evidence is necessary to know the full impact of e-cigarettes, FDA has opened a necessary pathway to acting faster when these risks are understood. I urge FDA to move forward without delay to protect our kids from the serious health risks of all tobacco and tobacco-related products.”
