Green Initiatives

APHA is committed to reducing the environmental impact of the Annual Meeting and finding ways to be more eco-friendly and responsible. Help minimize the meeting's impact on the environment.

1. Ditch the disposables  — Bring a refillable water bottle and thermos to use.

2. Eat Local — Ask for organic, locally grown produce, free-range or "wild-caught" fish and meats and antibiotic-free foods when ever possible.

3. Sleep Green — Book your hotel while registering to secure hotels with sustainable programs. Take advantage of linen re-use programs.

4. Go Digital — Skip the printed Final Schedule. Gain access to full meeting details through the mobile app.

5. Follow the Conversation — Follow @APHAAnnualMtg and @PublicHealth on Twitter and use the yearly hashtag to learn about what APHA is doing and how you can get involved. Follow us on our other social media pages

Annual Meeting Green Initiatives

Each year we implement more green initiatives, hoping to make our meeting more eco-friendly than the year before. We're happy to encourage sustainability through practice. At APHA, our environmental health programs highlight the connection between healthy communities and healthy people.

Don't forget to bring your walking shoes to the Annual Meeting. Join us in reducing emissions and promoting safe walking to improve health by joining the Steps Challenge. More information on the steps goal and signup will be available closer to the meeting.

Sustainable Venue

We seek venues that are leaders in resource conservation who are LEED Certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. We want our venue to be committed to supporting and encouraging sustainable practices, including the hosting of environmentally friendly "green" meetings.

Digital Access

  • Increased focus on digital marketing and email communication to eliminate print quantity of letters, preliminary programs and marketing pieces.
  • More than 80 percent of attendees registered online each year. Let's aim for 100 percent this year!
  • Our mobile app is getting better each year. Attendees are able to access all meeting details, can search for sessions, find speakers, select theme-related events and more.
  • All meeting details can be accessed through the online program and in the mobile app.
  • Unable to attend the meeting? Register for APHA Live for access to live-streamed and on-demand broadcasting of premier sessions at this year's meeting.

Eco-Friendly Printing

  • The optional Final Program and Highlights Promo are printed on 30 percent post-consumer recycled paper using soy-based inks & is FSC certified.
  • This year's Final Program is a streamlined guide to event sessions and locations only.

Reducing our Carbon Footprint and Waste

  • Recycle bins are placed in the registration area and throughout the convention center. Be sure to recycle your lanyards and printed Final Programs before you head home.
  • Meeting room signs are re-used year after year to reduce waste and cost. We also have switched to bio board and cloth to be used in future meetings.
  • Leftover food will be donated to local area food banks through a convention center program.
  • Used badge lanyards are recycled into raw materials that can be reused instead of being sent to landfill.

General Services & Audio Visual Contractor

  • Freeman is an expo member of the Convention Industry Council and is an AV platinum partner of the Green Meeting Industry Council. They have a longstanding commitment to sustainability and have received awards for transforming best practices and green practices.
