HEALTHY EATING IN PREGNANCY AND EARLY CHILDHOOD

  • Birth to 24 Months and Pregnant Women Dietary Guidance Development Project

To expand federal dietary guidelines to include infants and toddlers as well as women who are pregnant, federal officials have implemented a five-phase plan. Details about the project plan are posted at www.cnpp.usda.gov/birthto24months.

  • Kids Food Reboot Campaign:

Kids Food Reboot is a public health campaign initiated by FamilyCook Productions that encourages and supports parents in serving their children real food that can be enjoyed by the whole family at home or away from home. The campaign rallies child nutrition advocates and organizations to support their community with tips and strategies.

REAUTHORIZATION OF FEDERAL CHILD NUTRITION PROGRAMS

The federal Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 is set to expire on September 30, 2015.

This bill authorizes funding and sets policy for federal school meal and child nutrition programs, including the School Breakfast, National School Lunch, Child and Adult Care Food, Summer Food Service, and the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Programs as well as the Women, Infants and Children Program.  These programs ensure that low-income children have access to healthy and nutritious food.

SUSTAINABILITY AND FOOD SYSTEMS

  • Principles of a Healthy, Sustainable Food System (PDF): In June 2010, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, American Nurses Association, American Planning Association, and American Public Health Association initiated a collaborative process to develop a set of shared food system principles.
