New book from APHA Press maximizes opportunities to improve maternal and child health
Washington, D.C., April 26, 2018 – Over the past decade, practitioners in the field of maternal and child health have gained a general understanding of Life Course Theory and its potential application to practice. This model integrates the complex array of factors – from the biological to the environmental, the individual to the communal, the historical to the contemporary – that shape health and well-being. This leads to a greater understanding of how health develops and how disparities are created and perpetuated over time.
Edited by Sarah Verbiest, DrPH, MSW, MPH, this book focuses on moving theory into action, filling a need for practitioners across a variety of fields to maximize the opportunities this model offers. Moving Life Course Theory into Action is designed to fit into the busy lives of practitioners. With new ideas and strategies delivered in a compact, handbook-style format, each chapter includes key points that offer a quick summary of the main lessons.
Topics range from a description of the theory and its equity and historic foundations to applications in housing, incarceration and home visiting, along with methods for aligning communications, planning, policy, collaboration, evaluation, funding and leadership to support this new perspective.
“This book not only contributes to our knowledge, practice and understanding of Life Course Theory, but more importantly it provides identification, organization and understanding of its use for policy decision-making, teaching and training and practice," said APHA President Joseph Telfair, DrPH, MSW, MPH. "By paying attention to the book’s information and lessons, both academics and practitioners alike will make these critical and accessible tools available for addressing social and health inequities and other challenges faced by maternal and child health individuals and populations in the United States.”
