On Oct. 30, 2023, President Biden unveiled his new Executive Order regulating Artificial Intelligence (AI). Our own Dr. Adams, HIIT's Founder, attended the webinar. International Space Station Awards: ETC Company Juxtopia Awarded Grant from The Center for the Advancement of Science in Space

International Space StationDr. Jayfus Tucker Doswell, an APHA member of the HIIT Section leadership, and the APHA Tech Center chair, successfully lead his company, Juxtopia, to secure a grant award to create custom Juxtopia® wearable augmented reality goggles for use by astronauts onboard the International Space Station. The Juxtopia® wearable augmented reality Goggles were originally developed by a National Science Foundation grant award starting in year 2005, five years before Google Glass announced its product into the consumer marketplace.

The ISS supports a small population of astronauts who live onboard the ISS for six months at a time, and who come from various countries including  U.S., Russia, Japan, Canada and Europe.  The Juxtopia® wearable AR Goggles will be used onboard the ISS by astronauts from various countries to help them complete tasks in austere and extreme environments.



HIIT Section member Polly Sparks Turner, DrPH, MPH, RPh, was recently elected to the following key positions:

  • Chairman of the Advisory Board, School of Health Professions, The University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas.
  • Appointed to the UTHealth Development Board of Directors.
  • Elected president of the Alumni Association, School of Public Health, The University of Texas.  There are six schools of public health in Texas (Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, El Paso, and Brownsville)


HIIT Section founder and Chair Emeritus Diane L. Adams, MD, MPH, CHS-III, convened an “Ebola Webinar” for members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated ® North Atlantic Region which consists of eleven states (MD, DE, PA, CT, NY, NJ, MA, ME, NH, RI , VT, and District of Columbia) held on Monday, Nov. 10, 2014.

The keynote speaker was Daniel Chertow, MD, MPH, Assistant Clinical Investigator, Critical Care Medicine Department, Clinical Center, National Institutes of Health. Dr. Chertow’s topic was Ebola 101: Myths vs. Facts (Cause, Prevalence, Transmission, Treatment, and Outcomes). Check out Dr. Chertow’s youtube video (Inside an Ebola Clinic in West Africa)


Westat Senior Study Director Brenda A. Leath, MHSA, PMP, received a three-year appointment to the National Quality Forum's Care Coordination Standing Committee.  The NQF Standing Committee will review performance measures in the care coordination domain, including measures focused on patient experience of care, health information technology, transitions of care and structural measures.  Ms.  Leath served as the principal investigator and project director of the Patient Centered Care Collaboration to Improve Minority Health Initiative, a contract awarded  to Westat by the US Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Minority Health. Dr. Jamila Rashid was the federal project officer. Ms. Leath is a member of HIIT and served on the Governing Council, is a recipient of HIIT’s Exemplary Award in Leadership and is currently a Section Councilor.
