Gritz receives Renaissance Woman Award
APHA member Ellen R. Gritz, PhD, in October received the ninth annual Alma Dea Morani, MD, Renaissance Woman Award from the Foundation for the History of Women in Medicine and the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Gritz is professor and chair of the Department of Behavioral Science and Olla S. Stribling Distinguished Chair for Cancer Research at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Boone joins American Medical Association
Sonja Boone, MD, in October joined the American Medical Association as director of physician health and health care disparities. Boone will lead the association’s efforts to address the nation’s minority health and physician health efforts and will also work with the “Building a Healthier Chicago” project.
Kaufman joins National Diabetes Education Program
Francine R. Kaufman, MD, director of the Comprehensive Childhood Diabetes Center and head of the Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, in October began a three-year term as chair of the National Diabetes Education Program. She succeeds Lawrence Blonde, MD, FACP, FACE.
Lindhorst named AJPH Reviewer of the Year
Taryn Lindhorst, PhD, LCSW, in October was named Reviewer of the Year by the American Journal of Public Health. Lindhorst is an associate professor at the University of Washington School of Social Work.
American Cancer Society lauds Creed
Linda Creed, an affiliate of Public Health Management Corp., in October was awarded the American Cancer Society’s Project Award for “A Day in the Life of the Breast Cancer Research Laboratory — a Workshop for Breast Cancer Advocates.” The award acknowledges the outstanding contributions of a group of volunteers who have implemented a program in one of their priority areas of mission delivery or mission support.
AARP taps Hawes
Catherine Hawes, PhD, Regents Professor in the Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Rural Public Health, in October was appointed to both the National Policy Council of AARP and the Texas AARP Executive Committee. Hawes directs the school’s Program on Aging and Long-Term Care Policy.
Suicide organizations announce plans to merge
Two of the nation’s leading suicide prevent organizations — the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and Suicide Prevention Action Network USA — have announced their intent to merge. A final merger agreement will be developed over the next several months, with the merge expected to b completed by early 2009.
Ziv captures resuscitation research award
Ohad Ziv, clinical cardiac electrophysiologist at Rhode Island Hospital, in November received the second annual American Heart Association Philips Resuscitation Fellowship Award. The fellowship encourages young investigators in the early stages of their careers to advance the resuscitation field through basic and clinical research.
