Hendricks tapped by Trust for America’s Health
Karen Hendricks, JD, in July became director of policy development at Trust for America’s Health. In her new role, Hendricks will be responsible for developing major policy initiatives, including public health policy considerations under a reformed health care system.
Andrus named PAHO deputy director
Jon Kim Andrus, MD, in September was named deputy director of the Pan American Health Organization. As former chief of PAHO’s Immunization Unit, Andrus brings to the position 25 years of experience in the field of vaccines, immunization and primary care in developing countries.
Kaufmann to head NINDS office
Petra Kaufmann, MD, MSc, in September was named director of the Office of Clinical Research at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. In her new role, Kaufmann will steer the institute’s effort to increase the effectiveness of clinical studies.
Holst to head Medical Library Association
Ruth Holst in August was named president-elect of the Medical Library Association, an educational organization with more than 4,000 members across the globe. Holst is a librarian at the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Library of the Health Sciences.
Vanderbilt receives stimulus award
Vanderbilt University’s Institute for Global Health, which administers the scholars program managed by the National Institutes of Health’s Fogarty International Center, will receive $3 million in funding over the next year from the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The funds will be used to create jobs for early career scientists and increase the numbers of researchers and clinicians working in the global health field.
Lurie to fill HHS preparedness role
Nicole Lurie, MD, MSPH, in July won U.S. Senate confirmation to serve as the Department of Health and Human Services’ assistant secretary for preparedness and response. Lurie most recently served as co-director of the Rand Corporation’s Center for Domestic and International Health Security.
FDA welcomes Taylor
Michael R. Taylor, JD, in July was named senior advisor to Margaret A. Hamburg, MD, commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. A nationally recognized food safety expert, Taylor is a research professor at George Washington University’s School of Public Health and Health Services.
Carrier joins policy research group
Emergency physician Emily Carrier, MD, MSCI, in July joined the Center for Studying Health System Change as a senior health researcher. Her research thus far has focused on payment reform, the future of safety net providers under health reform, and the fragmentation and coordination of care.
