 Moving Forward

The spotlight is on public health professionals across the nation as like-minded colleagues in state after state join a national effort to improve the health and safety of American communities.  The National Public Health Performance Standards Program (NPHPSP) was initiated in 1998 as a partnership of seven national organizations.  The standards were developed and comprehensively field tested between 1998-2002 and officially launched in June 2002.  Since then, public health professionals in many states have used the instruments and are taking steps to make improvements within their public health systems.

The NPHPSP instruments were developed around the ten Essential Public Health Services.  The use of the Essential Services assures that the standards fully cover the gamut of public health action at state and community levels. 

The NPHPSP partners include:  The American Public Health Association (APHA), Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), National Association of Local Boards of Health, (NALBOH), National Network of Public Health Institutes (NNPHI), and Public Health Foundation (PHF).  

Training workshops sponsored by the NPHPSP partners are held annually and are attended by public health professional and other interested stakeholders from around the country.  The sixth annual workshop was held  April, 2008 in Nashville, Tennessee.
