One of the most serious health problems facing American youth is obesity, and evidence suggests that the problem is worsening rapidly. According to recent data from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), approximately one in five children in the US are now overweight. The number of overweight children has doubled in the past two decades, leading to a generation at risk for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and other serious health problems. Preventing obesity in our children is one of the most important public health issues facing the nation today. Innovative approaches and partnerships are needed to help address this growing problem.
