The Power of Policy Webinar 6 - Intersectoral Collaboration for Health: Reports from Local Health Departments

Increasingly, local communities throughout the U.S. are adopting a Health in All Policies (HiAP) framework to improve health and equity by incorporating health considerations into decision-making across all sectors.

 

This 90-minute webinar includes a short overview of the HiAP approach, and an introduction to the work of Baltimore’s Cross Agency Health Taskforce and Sonoma’s Health Action, including history, accomplishments, and a discussion of the lessons learned from these exciting local initiatives.

As health departments strengthen their focus on systems and environmental change to improve community health, data collection and assessment are critical in helping to inform those efforts. APHA contracted with NORC at the University of Chicago to conduct 10 case studies examining how health departments engage in effective policy work and highlight promising practices for public health policy development. This webinar presented an overview of the case study findings and also featured representatives from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the New Mexico Department of Health/Bernalillo County Place Matters Team who discussed their unique approaches to gathering and applying data and information to support policy development.

This webinar examined the legal distinctions between policymaker education, advocacy, and lobbying, and clarifies what policy activities health department staff can legally engage in. The webinar features the former chief legal advisor to the CDC discussing the importance of health departments engaging elected officials on public health matters and providing guidance for related policy activities, an expert on lobbying laws from the Alliance for Justice discussing the various legal definitions of lobbying, and a former state health department bureau director sharing lessons learned from the field about how to effectively and legally engage in policy work.
