APHA urges Senate to confirm Vivek Murthy as U.S. surgeon general without delay
Statement by Georges C. Benjamin, MD, APHA executive director
Washington, D.C., Dec. 8, 2014 — “Vivek Murthy is fully qualified to serve as our next surgeon general and should be confirmed by the U.S. Senate without delay.
“Earlier this year I announced my support for his nomination. Since then he has undergone a full public vetting and weathered any criticisms. The few concerns that have surfaced during this period have shown no merit. As I said previously, competence not age should be the primary qualification for this position. And one concern raised by the National Rifle Association runs counter to mainstream, science-based medical opinion. His nomination deserves our full support.
“The position of surgeon general was created more than 140 years ago through the advocacy and support of public health practitioners who later formed the American Public Health Association. Since then, we have weighed in on the appointment of every surgeon general. Looking back on that history and weighing Dr. Murthy's work to date, he is fully qualified for the post and we fully support him.
“The Senate should confirm him this week. We need Dr. Murthy as surgeon general. He is a proven leader with outstanding credentials for the position.”
