Personal Statement about APHA-SA: Throughout my MPH program, I have been eagerly looking for ways to become involved within public health and network with other students who held similar interest to mine and were not in my program. Attending a school that doesn’t have a school of public health is challenging in that way. However, after attending my first APHA conference and several VAPHA conferences I was introduced to the Student Assembly. I have several friends in their professional organizations and thought to myself, “why not do the same, you surround yourself with like-minded people but they are not part of the public health network directly”. It isn’t to say that is a bad thing, it’s great to be part of many networks but there is something about being part of your core network. I then received an email welcoming me to the Student assembly as well as an advertising of open positions. My mentors encouraged me to apply as it could only advance my career in which I did. I did not expect to receive the position but I was appointed and am very happy I made the extra effort to do so. This is my first position in the Student Assembly and look forward to all the learning opportunities in serving my peers and sharing experiences in a place that I will grow both professionally and personally. It is my hope that you will feel about public health as I do…It is ever-changing everywhere and always EXCITING! I look forward to serving you.
