Involvement in APHA-SA: Newsletter Co-Chair (2011- Present)

Degree Program: Doctor of Public Health (Epidemiology)

Practice/Research Interests:
Understanding tobacco-free policies at the community to the global health level. Application of theoretical models and epidemiological principles to the tobacco-free policies in the United States. Also, involved in cancer and cardiovascular epidemiological studies for the state of Tennessee.

Other Leadership Activities:
Member of the North East Tennessee Cancer Coalition (2009-present), Member of Tennessee Public Health Association (2009-present)

Plans after school:
Upon completion of my doctoral training in epidemiology, I plan to do a postdoctoral fellowship in order to further my knowledge and skills in understanding determinants of tobacco-free policies in the United States. As I acquire the necessary skills, I intend to pursue a teaching and research faculty position related to epidemiology in any higher education institution. While applying epidemiological principles, analyzing and understanding various determinants of tobacco-free policies at all levels of government, I plan to develop epidemiological models that direct public health policies towards clean air, surroundings and environment.

Personal Statement about APHA-SA:
APHA Student Assembly is a good platform for students to acquire leadership, communication and professional skills in the field of Public Health. It is also a good place to network, learn ad understand public health from students’ perspective. Being a student and involved in public health for more than 5 years, Student Assembly is a good source to give back to the public health. With my intention to reciprocate back to the organization which helped me develop my professional, communication and leadership skills, and also good experience with writing and reviewing manuscripts, I thought newsletter committee would be a good place to serve APHA SA. My interest to serve as the Newsletter Co-chair grew when one of my brief articles was published in the APHA SA newsletter. My passion towards public health, as well as to learn, communicate and network with other fellow public health students increased my interest towards APHA SA. As the Newsletter Co-chair, while learning from my fellow public health students, I wish to bring their stories, experiences, current events in their respective schools, research works, internship experiences and voices to the world through APHA – SA newsletter, News and Views. I look forward to work with fellow public health students for the next one year.
