Plans after school: Following the completion of my doctorate, I would like to further my training through additional education as a potential Sheila Johnson Fellow in the Harvard School of Government, the U.S. White House Fellowship, or the U.S. Presidential Management Fellows program. While I aspire to continue to hone my research skills with a focus on community engagement and expand upon my interest in minority/urban health policy, I ultimately hope to return to a leadership position within the federal government.
Personal Statement about APHA-SA: I survived Katrina. Though a simple statement, the intense struggle behind these three words have informed and transformed the realities of life as I’ve known it since August 2005. New Orleans, Louisiana was my home for four years while completing my undergrad degree at Xavier University of Louisiana. When I learned of APHA’s plans to hold its 2014 meeting in New Orleans, I felt inspired to serve as a Co-Chair for APHA’s Student Meeting because of the personal significance of New Orleans to me. I offer a wealth of unique knowledge about New Orleans, innovative planning ideas for the meeting, a detail-oriented nature, and passion for organizing and executing powerful events to this position. As a former resident of New Orleans, I recognize the many unique learning opportunities the city has to offer APHA’s student meeting attendees. As Student Meeting Co-Chair, I look forward to working to integrate the essence, history, and culture of New Orleans into the pertinent topics of public health that will be addressed at the student meeting. It is my pleasure to serve in the position of Student Meeting Co-Chair for the 2014 APHA National Meeting. I look forward to seeing you at the student meeting!!
