Involvement in APHA-SA: Advancement Committee Co-chair (2013-present)

School: University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill

Department: Maternal and Child Health

Degree Program: PhD

Practice/Research Interests: integrating health systems, life course approaches to MCH, violence prevention and treatment evaluation, mixed-methods research activities, applied public health statistics, perinatal and mental health services research, transdisciplinary public health practice

Other Leadership Activities: Royster fellow at UNC Chapel Hill;  Exhibitors Committee member UNC Minority health conference;  Gender-based violence working group member;  Emory’s Maternal and Child health certificate-student co-initiator

Plans after school: Upon completion of my doctoral studies, I hope to conduct independent research for private and governmental organizations. My content areas of interest are mental health, violence against women and health services after pregnancy loss. I hope to meet wonderful researchers, advocates and practitioners of public health to engage as a life-long learner in public health.

Personal Statement about APHA-SA: Public health is a wonderfully diverse field rich with opportunity for students eager to find their niche. I look forward to working through APHA-SA to build professional development opportunities for individuals at all stages of their academic and professional careers.  I hope to work with fellow committee members to encourage a culture of collaboration and synergistic activities. I look forward to promoting events with regional and campus liasons that further advancement of student careers. These activities will hopefully build on each other to increase the visibility of APHA-SA.
