APHA-SA Biosketch: Christy Gamble

Involvement in APHA-SA: Student Meeting Committee Member (2006,2008), Science Board Student Representative (2008-2009)

School: University of Pittsburgh

Degree Program: DrPH, Environmental Epidemiology and MS, Biostatistics

Practice/Research Interests: My primary interest is to study the racial differences (and health disparities) in asthma severity and management.  My overall goal is to combine the fields of environmental epidemiology and health policy to produce policies and laws that will protect and improve the environment.  Currently, I am working for an organization conducting environmental epidemiology research on the affects of pollution on children with neuro-developmental disorders.  This research will hopefully lead to the development of policies/laws that will require the strict enforcement of chemical emissions from businesses that are affecting the environment of Pennsylvania, mostly, the chilren in Pennsylvania.

Plans after school: I plan to finish my doctoral degree in Epidemiology by December 2009 and my Master's degree in Biostatistics by December 2010.  I would like to teach public health/epidemiology to undergraduate students while pursuing my interests in health policy/environmental law.

Personal Statement about APHA-SA: While receiving my MPH degree, I became very involved in the area of public health/epidemiology while working as an analyst for the US Navy and Marine Corps.  The experience and knowledge gained during my time working for the military motivated me to promote the field of public health to all students.  I have always been very active in student organizations and the community so I knew I wanted to continue to do so once I began my doctoral degree.  I joined APHA and became a member of the Student Assembly and instantly felt the need to network and become active in the organization.  While working on the student meeting for the 2006 adn 2008 meeting, I felt a sense of pride knowing that I was helping to spread the word about public health to students around the U.S.  My goal is to make public health a field that is recognized in universities and colleges around the U.S. and overseas.  Many college students have never head about the field of public health and what it has to offer as a career.  As the Student Meeting Director, I hope to provide more information on public health and what it has to offer.  I hope that it will give students the opportunity to network, learn, and have fun with one another.  The Student Assembly motivates me to get involved and provides an opportunity to meet professionals in the field.  I urge all students to become involved and to be an active voice in the public's health!
