"Progress in public health in the United States has been greatly advanced throughout its history by outstanding individuals. Today the need for leaders is too great to leave their emergence to chance. Yet there is little specific focus in public health education on leadership development..."

National Leadership Conference for Students in Healthcare
At the conclusion of the 1st Annual National Leadership Conference for Students in Healthcare (NLSC), leaders from 12 national students organizations representing more than 180,000 students in a variety of health and health related disciplines signed a memorandum of understanding to form the Student Health Alliance (SHA). With the formation of this alliance, SHA has in effect become the nation's largest organization of students advocating for and working to improve the health of our communities guided by our nation's prevention agenda, Healthy People 2010.

The concept for the National Leadership Conference for Students in Healthcare (NSLC) emerged from the growing desire of national health and health-related professions student organizations to embrace stronger relationships and work collaboratively to help eliminate health disparities and protect and improve the nation's health. NSLC succeeds in facilitating a dialogue among national student organizations representing health and health-related professions students in order to build a national student alliance and work collaboratively now and in the future.
