Workshop Minutes 2004
Notes on proceedings and documentation of presentations at CBPHC-WG Pre-APHA Workshop Held in Washington, DC, on 6 November 2004
Last November we held a successful workshop coordinated by Bridget Fellini and Jessica Greenberg from the Global Health through Education, Training and Service (GHETS) group. The morning session was moderated by Dr Jaime Gofin and focused on the effectiveness of CBPHC. Short presentations, on the theme of CBPHC approaches in which outcomes had been measured, were made by Jack Bryant, Mary Carrasco, Nathaly Herrel, Henry Perry, Meredith Long and Connie Gates. In the afternoon Judy Lewis and Bette Gebrian moderated group activities focusing on participatory planning in CBPHC. Please click on the links below for details of proceedings and some of the presentations.
Notes on the workshop were compiled by Henry Perry and Connie Gates. These notes give a good summary of the highlights of each presentation and the interesting discussions that took place throughout the workshop. (“Notes of 2004 Pre-APHA workshop.doc”)
Jack Bryant presented how the infant mortality was reduced in Pakistani squatter settlements through an outreach program that reached households. The importance of addressing the social determinants of health is highlighted especially with regards to AIDS orphans. (“New Challenges CB-PHC-JB.ppt”)
Nathaly Herrel presented how case management of malaria could be greatly improved by a participatory approach in Uganda (“CBPHC abstract_Herrel_MIHV.doc” and “MIHV_malaria.pdf”)
Henry Perry presented how long-term improvements in under-five mortality were achieved through the Hospital Albert Schweitzer in Haiti through CBPHC linked to a system of hospital referral and community development. (“HAS presentation.doc” and “HAS Mortality Impact APHA Nov 2004.ppt”)
Meredith Long presented the Care Groups system, used in projects in such countries as Mozambique, that reaches every household through trained volunteers. This system was developed by World Relief. ("Care groups.ppt," "Care Groups Poster Images 4-30-04.ppt," and "Care Group Manual.pdf").
