Become a New IH Section Member

Dear International Health Colleague:

This is an exciting time to be a member of APHA and also a member of the International Health Section!  IH activities during the past year have included almost 200 scientific presentations and posters at the annual APHA meeting.  Recently, the IH Section has been directly involved in significant international issues and provided advocacy and policy input to APHA on issues such as:

  • Alliances to decrease maternal mortality Global trade and its effects on health in developing countries
  • Pharmacovigilance and new essential drugs in Africa and elsewhere
  • Assessment of mortality after the 2003 invasion of Iraq
  • Health manpower recruitment and its effects on developing countries

At our June 2007 semi annual meeting, we discussed a number of key issues including: a significant increase in abstracts for the APHA annual meeting; advocacy actions for a humanitarian agenda, health workforce capacity, universal health coverage, the effectiveness of international aid, and maternal child health issues; the mentoring of new health professionals; and a report out on the Bellagio meeting for new pubic health strategies to support Africa and Asia.

To do even more for international health, we need active IH Section members.  We in the IH Membership Committee would be glad to connect you with specific IH Section officers and committee chairs.  They can give you in-depth information on the Section and on their committee activities and discuss how you could get involved.  Please check our website at APHA International Health Section for further information.

With the many challenges in the international health arena, we invite you to join our section in addressing these key issues.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Rose Schneider
