Disability Forum becomes a Section in the American Public Health Association
The Disability Forum was started in 1988 as the Caucus on Disablement by a handful of professionals who were interested in moving disability-related issues into the spectrum of public health. Several years later the small Caucus evolved into a Forum, which enhanced its visibility within the structure of the largest public health organization in the world, the American Public Health Association (APHA). In 2007, under the leadership of Gloria Krahn, Disability Chair, and several members of the Executive Committee, a full fledged membership drive was undertaken to recruit the necessary number for becoming a Section, the largest division in APHA. This past November we achieved an important milestone by becoming a Section. This is an important victory for health professionals interested in disability because it provides our Section with greater visibility and credibility among a broad group of health professionals, and ensures that public health issues related to policy, advocacy, education, training and research will be more inclusive of the disability community. The goals of the Disability Section will be to increase awareness and knowledge of disability issues across all public health professionals and the general public; advise APHA on policy development relevant to the lives of people with disabilities; and secure well grounded interest in addressing the needs of the disability community in all public health related matters. Members of the Executive Committee are listed below.
