APHA Physical Activity Special Primary Interest Group (PA SPIG)
Calling all students! Are you interested in physical activity assessment, surveillance, interventions, or policy? Are you considering in a future career in public health research, program planning, or policy? Then consider joining the American Public Health Association (APHA) and affiliating with the Physical Activity Special Primary Interest Group (PA SPIG) today at http://www.apha.org/about/membership
The PA SPIG wants to encourage and support new student membership and APHA Annual Meeting research participation for students; to provide an opportunity to network and explore public health education and career opportunities. To support this goal, we have established a New Student Member APHA Annual Meeting Participation Award. The APHA 140th Annual Meeting and Exposition well be held in San Francisco, CA from October 27-31, 2012; with a theme of Prevention and Wellness Across the Lifespan. This award will reimburse up to 15 student participants for $100 of their APHA Annual Meeting registration fees if the following requirements are meet:
1) Students must be new APHA members selecting the PA SPIG as a primary Section/SPIG member or existing APHA members who add a secondary affiliation to the PA SPIG. New primary or secondary members to the PA SPIG joining between Nov 1st 2011 and February 6th 2012 will have satisfied the first requirement. Proof of new member registration and nomination for award consideration should be submitted by February 7th to:

2) Students must submit an abstract in response to the PA SPIG’s call for abstracts for the APHA 2012 Annual meeting. The PA SPIG Call for Abstracts can be found at http://apha.confex.com/apha/140am/pa.htm
3) The students abstract must be accepted for presentation at the 2012 Annual meeting.
4) Students must register for the APHA 2012 Annual Meeting and provide documentation of registration by October 1, 2012 to Dr. James McClain (contact information above) so that reimbursements can be processed.
Awardees will be notified by July 2012 and will be recognized by the SPIG at the APHA annual meeting and SPIG newsletter.

The APHA Physical Activity Special Primary Interest Group (PA SPIG) invites students, educators, researchers, health professionals, advocates, and community members to submit abstracts for the APHA 140th Annual Meeting to be held October 29-31, 2012 in San Francisco, CA. We are seeking papers, posters, and sessions that address issues of physical activity and public health with particular emphasis on research, practice, and policy.

We had a host of exciting presentations and events at the APHA Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., October 29- November 2, 2011. The theme of the conference was "Healthy Communities Promote Healthy Minds & Bodies". Click here for a list of physical activity related sessions at the Annual Meeting.

The PA SPIG was proud to sponsor or co-sponsor over 20 sessions at the 2010 APHA Annual Meeting in Denver.
We had many excellent scientific sessions and social activities at the 2009 APHA Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, from round-table discussions and paper sessions on the latest in PA research to our PA SPIG Social & Reception, a water fitness class, and our 5K Fun Run/Walk.
