The 2010 John C Greene Annual Lecture in Dental Research was given by Alice M. Horowitz, PhD, on Jan. 17, 2010 at the Scientific Session of the UCSF Dental Alumni Association. The title of Dr. Horowitz’ presentation was “Health Literacy: The New Imperative to Improve Health.”

The lectureship is endowed by the University of California San Francisco Dental Alumni Association in honor of the distinguished former dean. Now Dean Emeritus, John C. Greene, DDS, MPH, had a highly successful career in the U.S. Public Health Service prior to coming to the UCSF. He was the first non-physician to serve as Deputy U.S. Surgeon General. During his service with the Public Health Service, he rose to the level of Chief Dental Officer and Rear Admiral. He was a clinician, scientist, educator, policy-maker leader, and mentor.

The 2010 lectureship marks the third time it has been awarded. The inaugural lecture was given by Dr. Dushanka V. Kleinman; the second by Dr. Myron Allukian Jr.  

The University provides an honorarium of $2,500 and travel expenses.
