The Jim Keogh Scholarship Fund Needs YOU!
The James P. Keogh Memorial Scholarship Fund established in 1999 honors the enormous contribution Dr. James (Jim) Keogh made to occupational health and safety. Jim was an outstanding colleague and generous mentor and teacher who nurtured and influenced the work of many others.
The scholarship fund helps the Occupational Health and Safety Section promote and strengthen the participation of students and union representatives in APHA. We recognize that we need the involvement of workers and new health and safety professionals to make our workplaces and communities healthy and safe. Scholarship awardees are provided with the Annual Meeting registration fee, a one-year student/community member membership and a $300 stipend for conference-related expenses.
The scholarship fund needs the support of all members of the Occupational Health and Safety Section. Please be generous in your tax-deductible contribution to the James P. Keogh Memorial Scholarship Fund. Checks should be made out to APHA-Jim Keogh Scholarship. Please include “Account # 328066-OHS Section” on the check. Send your contributions to APHA Attn. New Hampshire Council for Occupational Safety and Health Marks Workers' Memorial Day
(excerpts from the NH COSH press release dated April 27, 2011)
The families and friends of workers killed on the job in New Hampshire will gather tomorrow to honor and keep alive the memory of loved ones who died in workplace tragedies.
“This is a day on which we gather to remember those who were killed on job,” said Brian Mitchell, executive director of the New Hampshire Council for Occupational Safety and Health, “and a day on which we reaffirm our commitment to strengthening protections for those workers who are still on the job. Many of the incidents in which workers are killed are entirely preventable. We can – and must – do a better job of protecting workers.”
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the effective date of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, which was signed into law by then-President Richard Nixon. The Act created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to set and enforce workplace safety standards.

IOM Panel to Study the Inclusion of Work Information in Electronic Health Records
At the request of the CDC’s National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, the Institute of Medicine will conduct a (2011) study of the rationality and feasibility of incorporating patients’ work information into electronic health records. Information from this study will inform efforts at NIOSH to demonstrate feasibility of the inclusion of work information in electronic health records by a target date of 2013, and to provide rationale for the inclusion of work information in meaningful use guidelines. Access to patients’ work information – such as patient occupation, industry of employer, and work history and exposures in some instances – can provide patients’ medical care providers with powerful information for the prevention of work-related injuries and illnesses. The ability to aggregate health data by occupation and or/industry provides surveillance data not only for describing the burden of work-related health problems, but also for describing the distribution of various health outcomes by occupation and industry, and for targeting prevention and intervention programs by occupation or industry group (e.g., workplace wellness programs, medical screenings, etc.). The committee meeting took place on June 2 in Washington, D.C.; the meeting was open to the public.

Call for Nominations for Section Officers
We are looking for nominations for several leadership positions in the Occupational Health and Safety Section of APHA. New leaders will be working with a delightful group of people dedicated to help improve the health of workers and to advance knowledge and skills among health and safety professionals and activists. We invite you to consider nominating yourself or other colleagues who you think would be great leaders for our Section. The openings are for future years (see the notes for when terms begin and end). Our Nominations Committee is happy to discuss what is involved with any of the positions, and to work with you to pinpoint which position would be right for you. Nominations need to be into APHA by early February 2012, so please let us know soon of your interest. Transportation and Public Health
These are exciting times when considering the many ways our transportation systems impact health and equity in our communities. Congress extended the current federal surface transportation bill until Sept. 30, 2011, and Congressional committees are aiming to draft a new transportation bill before this latest extension ends.

Need-Based Scholarships Available for Students to Attend Annual Meeting
APHA is proud to announce the availability of need-based scholarships, sponsored by External Medical Affairs, Pfizer Inc., for student members to attend the 139th Annual Meeting and Exposition in Washington, D.C., from Oct. 29-Nov. 2, 2011. Twelve students will be granted registration and up to a $500 stipend to use toward food, lodging and transportation. An additional four students will be given Annual Meeting registration only. Recipients of the scholarships will be chosen based on financial need and essay. As part of the award, students will be strongly encouraged to attend at least one Section business meeting. New Goals for APHA 2011: Less Trash! Less Plastic!
The 2011 APHA Annual Meeting theme "Healthy Communities Promote Healthy Minds and Bodies" gives APHA members an opportunity to build on the 2009 and 2010 themes of Water and Social Justice as public health priorities.
Green Goals. The APHA Food and Environment Working Group, the Environment Section's 100th Anniversary Committee and APHA are setting goals to reduce waste and promote a sustainable, just and healthy food and water system.
Got Trash? We encourage everyone at the 2011 APHA Annual Meeting to increase efforts to reduce trash, especially paper and plastic.
The Diversion Rate (the recycling/trash ratio) in D.C. at the 2007 APHA Annual Meeting was 34 percent.
The Diversion Rate in Denver at the 2010 APHA Annual Meeting was 52.75 percent.
Can we achieve a Diversion rate of 75 percent at APHA 2011?
-- The D.C. Convention Center’s water fountains and food service sinks provide filtered water! Bring your own refillable bottle to the conference to cut down on plastic waste.
-- Plan events using local resources and services that encourage wise use of water and other resources. If you need advice or suggestions, contact us: firstname.lastname@example.org
-- Buy food sourced from sustainable producers and distributors.
-- If using disposables, use compostable products and use the facility compost program. Label containers so compostables do not go into the waste stream.

Update on APHA Book Publications – June 2011
