Carl Taube Award Henry Steadman, PhD

The Carl Taube Award for excellence in the field of mental heath services research will be presented to Henry Steadman, PhD. Hank Steadman has had a made a huge contribution to this field. Over the course of a distinguished career, he has been a pioneering researcher at the interface between the mental health and criminal justice systems. He has worked to translate that research into social action, working with providers from multiple systems in designing and evaluating services for addressing the needs of offenders mental illness. At the initial stage of his career, Hank directed the legendary Research and Evaluation Unit at the New York State Office of Mental Health, working with Joe Morrissey, Mary Evans and host of others who are members of our section. In this setting Hank and his colleagues were among the first researchers working in a state mental health agency, and by their example contributed to a belief on the part of agency directors across the nation that research has an important place in the operation of mental health services. Hank is now president of Policy Research Associates in Delmar, New York, a company he founded that works with the federal government and others in developing, overseeing and evaluating national multi-site studies in areas such as jail diversion, mental heath courts, juvenile justice and homelessness.
