Note from the Chair


I hope that all of you are keeping warm this winter.  It has already been a busy year for the HIV/AIDS Section with the development and implementation of the membership survey and the opening of the call for abstracts for the Annual Meeting in D.C.  More importantly, 2011 marks our 10 Year Section Anniversary, which merits celebration at the upcoming Annual Meeting, but also strategic planning for the future of the Section.  Thanks to all the committee chairs and members who are working hard on all these committees.  I look forward to working with and serving all of you as chair of the Section.

The HIV/AIDS Section of the APHA is conducting a brief, five-minute survey of its membership. We seek to understand members' experiences with the HIV/AIDS Section in order to improve ongoing Section Activities. We will present and discuss the results from the survey at the 2011 Annual Meeting.

Call For Abstracts

Deadline Feb. 11, 2011

The HIV/AIDS Section of the APHA invites abstracts and full session proposals presenting the results of scientific research, program evaluations, policy analysis, and lessons learned from community-based interventions related to HIV/AIDS for the 139th APHA Annual Meeting and Exposition to be held Oct. 29-Nov. 2, 2011 in Washington, D.C.

The theme of the 2011 meeting is “Healthy Communities Promote Healthy Minds & Bodies,” and abstracts and full session proposals that reflect this theme are particularly encouraged.

Abstracts may be submitted for oral, poster or roundtable sessions. Submission of an abstract to the HIV/AIDS Section is an expression of the presenting author’s intentions of attending the Annual Meeting and presenting the work should it be accepted.  For more information, please refer to the following website:

Public Health Materials Contest

TWENTY-FIRST Annual APHA Public Health Materials Contest

The APHA Public Health Education and Health Promotion Section is soliciting your best health education, promotion and communication materials for the 21st annual competition. The contest provides a forum to showcase public health materials during the APHA Annual Meeting and recognizes professionals for their hard work.

 

All winners will be selected by panels of expert judges prior to the 139th APHA Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.  A session will be held at the Annual Meeting to recognize winners, during which one representative from the top materials selected in each category will give a presentation on the winning materials.

 

Entries will be accepted in three categories; printed materials, electronic materials, and other materials. Entries for the contest are due by March 25, 2011.  Please contact Stephanie Parsons at sparsons@jhsph.edu for additional contest entry information.

Greetings from your Action Board Representative

Greetings from your Action Board Representative!

 

I hope that everyone enjoyed lovely holidays and that those of you deep in snow will get a reprieve soon.  Several deadlines are coming up that you need to be aware of and on which we need your action.  First, new proposed policies are due to APHA by Tuesday, Feb. 15.  If you are working on a policy and/or need assistance with a proposal, please don't hesitate to contact Timothy Sankary (Section Policy Committee chair; TSankary@yahoo.com) and me FulmerSL@dhec.sc.gov).  We look forward to your policy submissions! Once the proposed policies are submitted, the Section will have an opportunity to comment and make recommendations on the proposed policies to the APHA Joint Policy Committee and the Action Board.   

 

Second, the Joint Policy Committee and the Action Board will be coordinating the review of old APHA policies for archiving.  Policies from 1950-1955 and those related to public health infrastructure will be reviewed for the archiving list.  We definitely need input from our members on which policies should be archived and which should be updated.  An e-mail with detailed information about the process will be forthcoming.
