The HIV/AIDS Section will sponsor an exceptionally strong program this year at the APHA Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, with more than 200 presentations. The Section is the primary sponsor of 19 oral sessions with three to five presenters each; 11 poster sessions with 10 presenters each; and two roundtable sessions with 10 presenters each. Example session titles include: Emerging HIV/AIDS Issues for Discussion and Debate; HIV Prevention with Positives; and Sex for Sale: Global Implications for HIV/AIDS. One session, entitled Emerging Scholars in HIV/AIDS Research and Practice, highlights the impressive work of students, junior faculty and researchers, and new investigators and practitioners.

Other Meeting Highlights

This year the Section also has partnered with amfAR and SIECUS to sponsor a special session entitled: Beyond ABC and Abstinence-Only: The Politics of HIV Prevention to be held on Monday, Dec. 12, 4:30-6:00 p.m.

A late-breaking session, which the Section has added and has garnered much general APHA membership interest, is entitled: Voices from the Storm: Responding to the Needs of PWA/HIV After Katrina. A “must-attend,” this session will be held on Monday, Dec. 12, 6:30-8:00 p.m.

Business Meetings

In addition to scientific sessions, Section members and those interested in learning more about the Section are encouraged to attend business meetings!

The Section is sponsoring two key business meetings. The first scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 11, from 4:00-5:30 p.m., and the second Tuesday, Dec. 13, 6:30-8:00 p.m. before the Section Social. During the second meeting, the following awards will be presented: (a) The David Rosenstein Award for Outstanding Student Abstract; (b) Excellence in Abstract Submission on an International Topic; (c) Excellence in Abstract Submission by a New Investigator; and (d) Excellence in Abstract Submission among All Presenters. Be sure to come and help the Section recognize these award winners! For a flyer of the HIV/AIDS Section's Business meetings (including a map), please click the link below.
