APHA BUILT ENVIRONMENT Tour

Tour of Globeville, Five Points and Stapleton

Globeville housed the stockyards and mine smelters for Denver in the early 20th century, with many of the workers living in Five Points, Denver’s historic African-American neighborhood.  This tour visits these communities, and discusses how they are attempting to transform in spite of environmental hazards, being a food desert, a lack of infrastructure and overall neglect.  The tour will be facilitated by Daniel Scheppers from the state department of health, who led the state’s effort in addressing the Globeville environmental remediation.

The tour will end at the Stapleton Redevelopment Site, a neighborhood located at the former airport designed following smart growth principles.
